The RoPower Nulcear company, which is developing the first small modular reactor (SMR) power plant in Romania in Doiceşti, Dâmboviţa County, has become the first Romanian member of the American Nuclear Society (ANS), thus joining renowned companies in the nuclear field, a press release shows.
“RoPower Nuclear, the company developing the SMR project in Doiceşti, is the first and only institution in Romania to join the American Nuclear Society (ANS), an organization that has been promoting innovation, science and nuclear technologies for 72 years. ANS represents a center of expertise formed by nuclear engineers, researchers, scientists and other highly trained professionals from related fields, such as health.
Joining the ANS sends a strong signal of the company’s commitment to promoting nuclear technologies, especially in the context of developing the most advanced SMR project in Europe,” a press release published on Tuesday by RoPower Nuclear SA shows.
The company, which is developing the construction of a modular power plant with an installed capacity of 462 MWe, on the site of the former coal-fired power plant in Doiceşti, thus joins a global community of over 12,000 nuclear professionals and 120 partner organizations.
“RoPower will contribute to expanding the nuclear workforce and deepening public understanding and appreciation for nuclear science and technology,” said Craig Piercy, executive director of the American Nuclear Society, quoted in the RoPower press release.
In turn, RoPower Nuclear’s technical and operations director, Dan Şerbănescu, stated that the company’s membership of the ANS “starts from a compatibility of values” and “also provides access to this pole of expertise and international support for nuclear energy in general and for SMR technology specifically.”
ANS includes renowned nuclear companies as members, including NuScale Power, the developer of the technology used in the Doiceşti SMR project, as well as European leaders in the field of nuclear energy, such as Framatome.
Founded in 2022, RoPower is owned in equal shares by Nuclearelectrica SA, the national nuclear energy company, and Nova Power & Gas, part of the E-Infra group. RoPower Nuclear collaborates with prestigious international partners, such as NuScale Power, Fluor Corporation or Samsung C&T, to carry out the engineering and design (FEED) phases of the project.
