The Feasibility Study for the Bucharest-Giurgiu High-Speed Road started on Monday, with a 16-month deadline for completing the documentation of the first expressway, which is being designed on the border with Bulgaria, the National Road Investment Company (CNIR) announced.

The company signed the contract for the preliminary design of the Bucharest-Giurgiu motorway/expressway with an Association of engineering firms from Romania and Turkey in December 2025, the contract financed from European funds having a value of 34 million lei, according to a post on its Facebook page.

As part of the Feasibility Study, the designer will analyze: the road profile (motorway or expressway), the route options, the structure and connections with other investment objectives, such as the future Bridge over the Danube at Giurgiu-Ruse.

Regarding the structures and technical solutions, CNIR requested the designer an analysis on the use of imported or domestically produced construction materials. Thus, the provider will make a comparison between the cement concrete road system and the bitumen roadway.
The feasibility study will form the basis of solid documentation, which will allow the launch of the tender for the next stage of design and execution.

‘The first high-speed road that facilitates the connection with Bulgaria, becomes a strategic one and will contribute to modern road transport and connectivity between the two countries,’ the company’s post also states.
