Wind codes, a blessing for Romanian wind energy producers. Romania exports energy massively, at good prices

Share

The wind codes of the last few days have made wind power the first source of electricity generation in Romania most of the time. We have exported energy massively, amid low consumption.

The wind codes that were issued for several areas of the country also brought wind to the wind farms. Thus, with an installed capacity of about 3,100 MW, there were many moments when wind power produced an instantaneous power of over 2,600 MW, being the first source of electricity generation in the country, sometimes covering almost a third of the electricity production.

National electricity consumption is lower during these holidays, so the high production from wind power, corroborated with a significant contribution from hydroelectric and gas-fired power plants, makes Romania a net exporter of electricity, most of the time. And sometimes exports were very high, at powers of over 2,500 MW, as was the case today at 1:00 PM

Below, the state of the energy system over the last six days, according to Transelectrica data

Good prices

Despite significant electricity production, prices have not dropped much, with prices in the coupled day-ahead markets (DAM) in our area being over 90 euros/MWh. This means that, at least for energy exports made through the DAM coupling mechanism, Romanian producers – including wind energy, those who “stay” longer in DAM, should receive good prices.

For example, this evening, Romania is also exporting energy at the price of 122 euros/MWh (quarter hour with no. 73 CET, i.e. 19:00-19:15 Romanian time) to the networks in Bulgaria and Hungary, the only markets in the DAM coupling mechanism with which we have a physical connection. At a power of 544 MW to Hungary and 244 MW to Bulgaria, in that quarter hour with the maximum price of the day.
